Avery’s Story
I am submitting this story on behalf of my son Avery. In his 27 years, he has experienced more pain and suffering than anyone should be subjected to. His story began as a newborn. He was born with congenital heart disease and needed surgery immediately to save his life. One of the meds that was given during this time caused his kidneys to shut down. He was given emergency peritoneal dialysis in the NICU. After a long hospital stay, he was able to come home and attempt to live a normal life. His life consisted of doctors, shots, IV’s, hospital stays and home schooling because he was too ill to attend school in person. We gave him a Beenie Baby or stuffed dog every time he had to endure something painful. We still have 5 black Hefty bags full of his “babies”. When he was 9 years old and very weak, his first miracle from God occurred. We ran into some friends while out with Avery and their hearts broke when they saw him. They went to their church leader the next morning and “layed hands” over Avery. That very same evening, God answered by giving Avery the gift of a cadaver kidney! His health improved and he was able to be a kid again. Over the following years, life was not easy and there were many struggles for him, but he is a fighter. Fast forward to 4 years ago. The donated kidney started failing. After unsuccessful attempts to save it, he was told that he needed a 2nd kidney transplant. As he prepared himself to be on the “list” again, he learned that he had lymphoma, and transplant plans were halted. Chemotherapy was started along with dialysis 3-4 days every week. In 2026 it was determined that the lymphoma was controlled enough to proceed with transplant once again. His sister attempted to be his donor but was ultimately declined. Now he waits. He is on the deceased donor list, but it can take 10 years for a kidney to be offered to him. He is so eager to begin his adult life, but has been knocked off of the tracks several times. We appreciate all of your thoughts and prayers and you are in a place that you can help, please contact us. Please feel free to forward his story. Thank you.
You Could Be Avery Becerrq’s answered prayer.
Living kidney donation is a common procedure. Most donors return to normal life within a few weeks. If you feel called to explore this, you can begin the donor process at Avery’s transplant center, UCLA.
Not ready to donate? Pledge to pray for Avery.
